N1.4trn penalty too heavy to bear – MTN



A MTN service provider tries to register a client's SIM card in Lagos, on October 27, 2015. Nigeria's telecommunications regulator has fined South African mobile giant MTN $5.2 billion for missing a deadline to disconnect unregistered SIM cards, the company announced on Monday. The penalty saw shares in Africa's largest telecommunications company crash more than 12 percent to 167 rand on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the biggest fall the firm has suffered in a day since November 1998. Three days after Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC slammed a N1.4 trillion penalty on MTN Nigeria for failure to disconnect customers with unregistered SIM cards, Parent company MTN group has cried out that the fine was too extreme, even as it continues to engage the regulator on how to resolve the issue.

Akure youths flogged Eze-Ndigbo out of Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo palace


 Akure, the capital of Ondo State, has remained grounded since Tuesday following a clash between Igbo indigenes and Akure youths.

The Akure youths accused the Igbos of disrespecting their monarch, the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo. This followed the alleged refusal of the Igbos to obey the instruction giving by the monarch.

Soldiers In Arepo: Harassment & Humiliation Of Residents


There is currently very heavy Military and DSS personnel in armoured and other military vehicles in the Arepo area of the Lagos-Ogun border area since last weekend, and the thinking has been that this is in line with protecting petroleum pipelines, and fighting pipeline vandal gangs.



It would be recalled that last month, seven DSS officials were reported to have been killed in that area. Residents have however been complaining about the conduct of the military and intelligence personnel. Complaints have been made of harassment and humiliation of civilians in the community,
